Vacationing in Phuket – Finding Your Luxury Resort in Karon

Inside information

One of the things you’ll notice when you fly into the resort destination of Phuket, is the extent of the island’s lush vegetation and greenery. Sixty percent of the island is covered by forests, rubber and oil plantations.  The popular resort beaches lie on the west coast, whilst its mountain range stretches north to south of which the highest point is Mai Thao Sip Song (Twelve Cains) at 529m above sea level.

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand with a population of around 320, 000 people and a land area of 543 square kilometres (about the same size as Singapore).  It is located in the Andaman Sea off the coast of southern Thailand and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

A brief check on the history of Phuket unravels a tin trade with the English, French and Dutch and skirmishes with the Burmese in the 17th and 18th century. Chinese workers and businessmen were employed in the tin mines during the 17th century, the influence of which still remains in Phuket today; notably with Phuket cuisine. In 1785 the Burmese attempted to attack Phuket. The siege which lasted two months ended after the Burmese were forced to retreat. Nowadays with the demise of the tin mining trade due to low tin prices, Phuket’s main industries are divided into two; one is rubber, the other tourism. Thailand is now the biggest rubber producer in the world. Whereas tourism has attracted millions of visitors to the resort region over the last 30 years.

Squeaky White on the Horizon

One of its main tourist attractions is, of course, the beautiful palm fringed beaches and golden or white sands that stretch for miles. Tiny palm coves and bays inundate the coastline where some of the most gorgeous and luxurious hotel resorts blend in with the natural beauty. When considering the quieter Phuket resorts, one particular beach comes to mind. That is Karon beach, a short distance south of the main Patong beach. Karon beach spans 6 km of coastline and is famous for its beautiful white sands which make that unique squeaking noise as you walk on it. Favored by couples and families, Karon beach can claim fame to the Horizon Karon Beach Resort and Spa located at the southern end of the beach and just a stone’s throw from the idyllic Kata beach. The resort itself is set on 16000 sqm of land and is surrounded by a forest vegetation of lush green. It’s slightly elevated position offers marvellous views which allows for guaranteed peace and tranquillity. Easy access to the area from Phuket town and the more lively Patong beach offers its visitors the chance to not only relax and enjoy Karon’s lush natural surroundings but also to participate in more vivacious activities such as exciting nightlife and shopping. The resort offers free scheduled transport to Patong Beach. Also available around Karon beach are marine activities such as diving and snorkelling, day trip excursions can also be arranged. Honeymooners who stay more than four nights may enjoy extra added on service at the Karon Beach Resort Hotels by receiving complimentary gifts on arrival. While families who reserve a second inter-connecting room for children can enjoy a 30% discount on the room-rate and a 20% discount on all beverages and food consumed at the hotel resort during their stay.

Surfing Santas

If you’ve been to places like Bondi beach, you won’t be surprised to find a pot bellied Santa dressed in his red coat, full beard surfing the waves down on the coasts of Sydney, Australia. This is about as far as it goes for the Australian Beach Xmas, sure there are a few beach parties but nothing of the level you will find in places like Thailand for example-and they aren’t even Christians! Fortunately for the sake of entertainment, having a great time anytime is not restricted to certain religions, for the fun loving Thais it’s any excuse for a party and off they go big time.

If you are staying down at the Karon Beach resorts-you won’t be disappointed in the celebrations that go on.  Approximately two weeks of full-on Christmas and New Year beach parties, hotel parties, beach barbies, you name it and something is there for you.

Discover the Beauty of Pattaya

Singapore Tourist Attractions
Wolfgang Jaegel asked:

Pattaya is an enchanting destination, located along a pictorial bay on the East Coast of the Gulf of Thailand, about 150 km southeast of Bangkok, in Chon Buri province. Once a typical fishing village, Pattaya underwent a great revival when a troop of American Military, consisting of about 100 servicemen, who joined the Vietnam War came here for relaxation on 29 April 1961.

Soon, Pattaya became a premier vacation spot of Thailand. The destination has now evolved into a favorite holiday beach resort of Southeast Asia, and boasts of everything that is required for a luxurious vacation, such as, more than 400 assorted hotels and resorts, city-like dining options, excellent shopping facilities, and intoxicating nightlife. Additionally, this incredible beach resort is only second to Bangkok in high rise structures.

Due to its proximity to Bangkok, Pattaya is a popular weekend getaway for the city’s dwellers. It is estimated that this exotic beach destination welcomes more than five million tourists every year. Further, inspired by the tranquility as well as the excellent options it render, many Americans, Europeans, and people from East Asian destinations, including professionals, families, and retired people, have now started to settle down here.

The focal point of Pattaya is undoubtedly its unspoilt beach, categorized into north, south, and central. Stretching from the Dolphin roundabout near Dusit Resort, North Pattaya, otherwise known as Pattaya Neau, is perhaps the most peaceful among the beaches in the area. Located south of the North Pattaya is the Central Pattaya beach, a perfect spot for fun and recreation. This beach area is packed with boutique shops, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Nearby Central Pattaya is South Pattaya, which attracts many fun-loving travelers. With a variety bars, discotheques, and nightclubs, the area becomes energetic during night. In short, this destination is for adults only.

Located south of Pattaya beach is Jomitien Beach, which is another thriving beach in the area. Dong Tan is also a much famed beach in Pattaya. All of the beaches in the area provide options to enjoy an array of fun-filled as well as recreational activities.

For instance, if you are a diving enthusiast, Pattaya has diving shops to offer PADI and NAUI certificate courses and that too at affordable rates. For expert divers, the Ko Rin and Ko Man Wichai offer great options. Windsurfing is another great activity that can be enjoyed here. Jomtien Beach is regarded as a center of windsurfing, the evidence for which is the board competitions that are conducted by the Pattaya Windsurf Club. Likewise, the southern and northern parts of Pattaya beach and Jomtien beach are considered an excellent spot for water skiing.

But, the activities that are available at Pattaya are not just confined to water sport activities. For example, Pattaya, together with Chon Buri, offer great facilities for golf lovers, with a number of golf courses designed by world-famous golfers. Similarly, with two alleys of international standards, Pattaya offers excellent choices for activities like bowling. Some great options are available for game lovers, such as paintball, with an exclusive ground in order to play the game. Those visiting the paintball ground can also take a visit to small racing ground nearby, which is especially designed for go-kart racing. A myriad of other activities can also be enjoyed in Pattaya such as traditional Thai massage, taking Thai cooking classes, and learning Thai culture and language.

However, Pattaya provides more than beach, island tours, and nightlife. In addition to water sport activities and shopping, the city provides a feast of attractions for sightseers and nature lovers. Among which, most significant are:

- Million Years Stone Park and Pattaya Crocodile Farm, boasting of beautiful rock gardens, more than 200 years old bonsai trees, and a great collection of animal species such as albino bears and crocodiles

- Elephant Village, where display of training methods as well as elephant rides are available

- Funny Land Amusement Park, which is a great area for both grown-ups and children, with specialties like Swing Vikings Ship, Samba Tower, Slalom Roller Caster, Family Swinger, Demolition Derby, Musical Carousel and a Monorail

- Siriporn Orchid Farm, where you can see an astounding array of orchids such as catteleyas, vandas, daedrovium, escosanda and pompadours

- The Bottle Art Museum, which has on display a great selection of over 300 glass bottles consisting of replicas of churches, palaces, and temples

- Mini Siam, a miniature city with replicas of about 80 sacred places as well as most prominent historical sites in the country

With these umpteen attractions, it is no wonder why people flock here throughout the year. Hence, the growing number of tourists has led to a tremendous increase in the number of hotels and resorts. Pattaya has accommodation to suit every taste and pocket. Luxury lovers can take advantage of upscale hotels and resorts coupled with top-end facilities and comforts.

Many of the hotels and resorts in the area offer excellent packages inclusive of 3 or 4 night accommodation, dining, and facilities to enjoy some of the activities in the area. Some even customize this package according to your requirements.

Singapore, the Gateway to Asia, Calls With Shopping, Sights and Fantastic Festivals

Singapore Tourist Attractions
Andrew Regan asked:

Perched on the tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore’s small size belies the huge number and variety of bazaars, markets and malls which make it a shopper’s paradise. Located at one of the major intersections of the world, Singapore’s strategic position has allowed it to grow into a major centre for trade, communication and tourism - and has earned it the nickname “gateway to Asia”.

Singapore’s success as a shopping haven can be partly attributed to its long history as a major port. During the 14th century, Singapore was part of the Sumatran Empire, and as a natural meeting point of major sea routes, the port saw many traders from China, Arabia, India and Europe. After a brief period of control by the Portuguese and subsequently the Dutch, the British saw the potential of Singapore as a strategic base for their expanding empire. They claimed it as a British Crown colony and established a centre of free trade, which attracted even more merchants from all over the world and led to a huge growth in population and economy.

With its long history in trading, it’s no surprise that Singapore has grown into the exotic shopping mecca it is today. The city can be divided into several main shopping areas, each offering a different experience. In Chinatown, merchants display wares such as fine silk, gold jewellery, exotic snakeskin medicines and pungent spices. For some Arabian flare, try the bazaar style shopping area that houses Singapore’s Muslim community; here you’ll find traders renowned for textiles, baskets and woven leaf goods. Little India, as the name suggests, is full of flavour from the sub continent, offering an array of silverware, saris and delicious Indian cuisine. And if you’re hungry for more excitement, head to Orchard Road - a premier shopping belt housing some of the largest and most popular shopping centres such as Centrepoint. This is truly a shopper’s paradise, offering everything from casual clothing and electronics to Oriental rugs, fine arts, Asian antiques and books.

But aside from year-round attractions and shopping splendours, Singapore boasts a number of seasonal attractions. The Dragon Boat Festival for example - the commemoration of a Chinese patriot who protested against government corruption - is celebrated each summer with boat races across Marina Bay. Autumn sees events like the Chinese Festival of the Hungry Ghosts and the Hari Raya Puasa, while winter invites the Chinese New Year celebration - so no matter what time of year you visit, you’ll be able to experience Singapore’s unique offerings.

As a major tourist hub and popular stop over destination, there are plenty of frequent flights to Singapore direct from London. And you’ll have a massive choice for accommodation, ranging from youth hostels to luxurious hotels - so you’re sure to find something to suit your budget. With so many attractions and shopping opportunities to choose from, it’s impossible to see everything; but Singapore’s safe streets and long opening hours mean that you can cram a lot in. And with some shopping areas opening 24 hours a day, you really can shop until you drop!
